Dear All,
The end of a very demanding year is fast approaching and I’m happy to be sending you our last newsletter for 2009 packed with new developments.
Since we last communicated following the IFES Extraordinary General Assembly, it has been a busy November preparing the IFES restructuring, developing the new member communications, attending meetings and launching new partnerships.
You can find out all about the value of the new IFES Individual Company membership here.
I’m also delighted to announce that IFES has started a partnership with Expopedia.net. Our IFES Partner Guide network has facilitated the collaboration between IFES members but now our partnership with Expopedia will bring the same principal of sharing trusted suppliers to a much wider audience. The Expopedia search engine has been designed with the aim to connect professionals with the service partners they need, either local to the event they are participating in, or local to the professional making the search.
As you know, IFES has been at the forefront of supporting the delivery of International Exhibition & Events services through a trusted supplier network. The approach has demonstrated multiple benefits such as increased quality for the exhibitor, cost effective solutions and the key objective of increasing the sustainability of Exhibiting worldwide.
The launch of this partnership is especially important as we enter the new IFES structure with a much larger company membership base in 2010. IFES members in their working groups will take the lead in working on the core issues and initiatives for the industry whilst in parallel, Expopedia will provide the technological and commercial platform to facilitate making international business connections.
Also in the past month, IFES has been busy representing the interests of Exhibit & Event service companies in UFI meetings. I attended the UFI Congress in Zagreb, Croatia on 28-30 October and the UFI Operations Committee meeting was hosted at the IFES Management office in Brussels.
As we look at the plans for 2010, I would urge you all to participate. We have great potential to launch a truly international platform for both the exchange of knowledge and business opportunities. The more inclusive our membership group is, the more productive and beneficial for all.
We know that many challenges lie ahead in 2010 but I am sure that we will face them better if we do it together!
Kind regards

Moreno Zaccarelli
IFES President

IFES & Expopedia.net – what does it mean?
The concept behind the IFES Partner Guide was to promote the delivery of International Exhibition & Events services through a trusted supplier network. The approach has demonstrated multiple benefits such as increased quality for the exhibitor, cost effective solutions and the key objective of increasing the sustainability of Exhibiting worldwide.
Expopedia.net has developed an advanced, user friendly platform to facilitate the locating of a service partner for exhibitions and events anywhere in the world. This platform will be used by both professionals looking for partners and by exhibitors seeking specific services.
The partnership will see the existing IFES Partner Guide integrated into the Expopedia platform… why?
- IFES Members looking for each other will still be able to focus on our membership group
- Now IFES Members will also be visible to the entire public using the Expopedia platform
- Integrating the two means that IFES members need only maintain one set of company profile data but will be visible to both their member colleagues and potential new clients wherever they may be searching from
What does it mean for our exhibitor clients?
- Visitors to Expopedia will identify themselves according to “where they are from”, “what they are looking for” and “where they need it”
- IFES Members can register themselves as local suppliers at the venues nearest their company where they do most of their work so they will be listed as a core supplier
- In addition, IFES Members can list the countries where they have established partnerships
- Vistors will therefore see both the suppliers who are local to the venue AND local to them
The result?
- It is more easy to find and to be found!

IFES AGM & Convention 2010 - Shanghai

The 2010 IFES AGM and Convention will be held on 21-26 June 2010 in Shanghai, China.
The event will take place on site at the EXPO 2010 Universal World Exhibition which will take place from 1 May to 31 October 2010. China is the second Asian country, after Japan (EXPO 2005 in Aichi), to stage a world exhibition in the 21st century.
A 5.28 km² exhibition area has been set aside for the EXPO park and the national pavilions, right in the middle of the mega-city of Shanghai, not far from the city’s old and new centres. Visitors will be able to stroll around the site on both sides of the Huangpu River and enjoy the view of the water and the “Bund” promenade.
The EXPO site is divided into five zones: three on the eastern bank of the river (in the Pudong district with the famous skyline of modern Shanghai) and two on the western bank (in the Puxi district), closer to the old city centre. The two sides will be joined by bridges and tunnels for cars and underground trains. Foot-passenger ferry services across the river are also planned.
Even though most of the visitors are expected to come from China, an international opinion research institute commissioned by the EXPO organisers has found that approximately five per cent of the guests are likely to come from abroad. That would equal 3.5 million people!
A trip on your own could be a daunting experience but this IFES meeting, organised in collaboration with FAMAB and will give you an exclusive access to this event as part of a VIP Group.
As well as the benefits of the group visits with organised transfers, no queuing and priority access to selected exhibits, IFES will organise informative speaker sessions, focused on regional issues and perspectives.

IFES at the UFI Congress 2009

IFES President Moreno Zaccarelli attended the UFI Congress in Zagreb on 28-30 October. More than 350 senior executives from the International exhibition industry were in attendance.
UFI’s President John Shaw kicked off the Congress stating, “This past year has been a challenging one for the world’s exhibition industry as all businesses have
worked hard to cope with the impact of the global economic crisis. We have seen, however, that the best quality exhibitions continue to provide great value to marketers and some have even managed to grow in these tough times.”
Dominic Swords, noted economist, highlighted the need for innovation as a driver of growth. “Studies show that the return to innovation is maximized at the turning point of a recession
when the market is most receptive and when innovators can develop market share advantages.”
Building on this, Werner Dornscheidt (President & CEO Messe Düsseldorf) addressed the value of sustainable service and facilitation management as keys to providing increasingly empowered customers with the added-value benefits necessary to guarantee their loyalty in today’s highly competitive and transparent market.
Trendwatcher Vincent Everts took this a step further challenging the exhibition industry to adapt to today’s digital consumer lifestyle. Exhibition professionals must apply vision and drive to take this digital momentum and use it to create an integrated exhibition experience.
IFES was also represented on the Associations Committee where upcoming items include the Delphi study, commissioned to examine what the exhibition of 2020 might look like.

IFES was represented by Frédéric François, Expobel President. The Operations Committee brings together Venues, Organisers and Service providers to discuss common challenges in the preparation and delivery of exhibitions.
IFES represents the Exhibition Service providers perspective on this committee. We will be looking for more volunteers to support the representation of IFES on collaborative projects so if you are interested, please let the IFES Office know.

New Pavilion B opened at Fiera di Genova, Italy

The 49th Genoa International Boat Show earlier this month saw the inauguration of the new Pavilion B at the Fiera di Genova in Italy.
The new pavilion stands out for an extensive use of glass surfaces and reflecting false
ceilings and, on the southern side, for its perfect integration with the sea.
The new pavilion is characterised by its strategic location, at the entrance of Genoa port, and by the unique setting of Genoa fair and exhibition centre, which includes pavilions, large marinas, and wide outdoor areas. The building rises on two floors used for exhibition purposes and an intermediate floor on the sea side where toilets, service facilities and offices are located. The overall exhibition area is twenty thousand square metres (the previous pavilion’s was ten thousand), out of a total gross surface of thirty five thousand square metres (including the foyer, the common areas, and the areas used for toilets and technical rooms). The net surface area, not
including technical rooms, is 30,396 sq m.
