IFES Overview Sustainability Standards
There are many different Sustainability standards around, and while by no means exhaustive, here is a comparative overview to help you decide what approach would be best for your company.
Glossary of Terms around Net Zero
Net Zero Carbon Events provided a great overview of terms and definitions you may come across learning about carbon footprint calculations etc. You may find it in “Appendix I: Glossary” (pp. 73-76) of their roadmap to Net Zero.
Carbon Footprint Calculator
Probably the most important tool to assess one’s environmental sustainability is a carbon calculator. As of right now, there are multiple; however, none of them is an exhaustive solution for our industry, nor is there a standardized backend and methodology. One of the missions of the Net Zero Carbon Events initiative therefore is to define exactly this – a standardized backend and methodology following the greenhouse gas protocol. Until this is realized, you are more than welcome to contact Dominique Bohler from our office ([email protected]), who will help you find the right calculator for your project.
Oxford Net Zero Tools Calculator
Oxford University provides a library of different tools and guides towards net zero that could come in handy.
Collection of Best Practices
The NZCE initiative provides a list of possible best practices within the events industry, which could help you get started on your pathway to net zero.
Furthermore, IFES members themselves reported their best practices during our open Sustainability Committee meeting at the World Summit 2023 in Singapore.
Greenhouse Gas Protocol
The Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG) is an international organization which sets standards to measure and manage emissions. They provide valuable training resources on their website.
Circular Economy
The circular economy approach aims to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions by reusing, repairing, refurbishing, and recycling existing materials and products as long as possible. They provide helpful content on their website.
UN SDGs
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals are 17 areas the UN sees necessity to act upon to realize enduring sustainability for everyone around the globe.
