ABOUT THE PROJECT
Two important corporate sustainability goals at Moss are to (1) reduce waste-to-landfill by 50% by 2025 and (2) become net zero by 2040. Introducing an industrial composting program makes progress against both of these goals since food waste sent to landfill creates unnecessary space and also is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions since decaying food waste represents 8% of total greenhouse gas emissions.
To implement this we partnered with WasteNot, Chicago’s leading compost collection service that was also rated #1 in the country for 4 years in a row. They not only provide everything needed to get started but also collect the compost weekly in a fully-electric set of vehicles!
Moss also converted all plates, cups, and utensils to compostable items. Furthermore, we have even introduced whole coffee beans and grinders to eliminate the wasteful plastic bags that pre-ground coffee comes in. We continue to implement small changes to further reduce trash, for example by replacing packaged condiments with larger bottles.
THE RESULT
The program was implemented successfully in January 2024. The over 200 Moss employees in the US facility embraced the new way of disposing of their waste and we have already seen an enormous amount of waste diverted from landfill. The employees also appreciate the program and several have utilized the home service that WasteNot offers. We are proud to continue innovative thinking around sustainability at Moss.
